HEAD END SYSTEM (HES)

 HEAD END SYSTEM (HES)

The Head-End System (HES) is a un`ified web application platform that can be visualized as a central platform that interacts with smart meters and provides utility companies with an easy-to-use interface for managing data and communication with both AMR (Advanced Meter Read) and AMI (Advanced Meter Infrastructure) meters.

Conceptual view of communication technology

Key Functionalities

The unified Head End System (HES) is part of the deployed secured IPv4/IPv6 network established for communication with meters directly (in case of cellular) or, through Gateway (for Genus RF mesh) or, through DCU (Data Concentrator Unit). The key functionalities of Genus HES are as:

  • Customized Dashboard
  • Integration with 3rd party system
  • Data view, monitoring and analysis
  • Real time alerts on system
  • Prepayment functionalities
  • Remote communication and configuration
  • FOTA (Firmware Over The Air) feature
  • Role based user rights and controls
  • Cloud enabled application having web interface for monitoring and controlling of metering devices through intuitive and interactive web GUI
  • Genus HES provides a comprehensive suite for controlling the Meter Data Acquisition System (MDAS), analyzing the data captured by MDAS, and providing data exchange interface for MDMS. Acquire data from different make of meters
  • Capable to capture the data pushed by meters at predefined interval or On Demand Read (ODR) jobs.
  • The system acquires real time instantaneous data like current, voltage, power factor, reactive power, frequency, active power and at specified regular intervals for online monitoring.
  • Report and Analysis Part:- The HES shall be equipped with a report module which must contains several reports related to Meter data on basis of requirement, in which the user can filter the consumers as per the requirement.
  • Network Security

The Network have an adequate cyber security measures not limited to the measures as described below. The network security would be extended to all the interfaces also. The security may leverage the following:

    • Secure Access Controls
    • Authorization Controls
    • Logging
    • Hardening
    • Malicious Software Prevention
    • Network Security
    • Device Security
    • It shall keep record of network failure, no. of packet dropped, retry attempt, missed periodic reading, number of failures to connect and report of network failure.

What is Head End System ?

The Head End System (HES) is a centralized computer system that collects and manages data from smart meters and other devices in a utility network.

What are the benefits of Head End System ?

Benefits include real-time data collection, improved operational efficiency, accurate billing, and enhanced monitoring capabilities for utilities.

How does Head End System work ?

HES works by gathering data from smart meters, processing it, and then transmitting the information to utility back-office systems for billing and analysis.

What does Head End System do ?

HES facilitates the collection, management, and analysis of data from smart meters, enabling utilities to monitor, control, and optimize their networks.

What are Head End Systems for Smart Meters ?

Head End Systems for Smart Meters specifically focus on managing the data generated by smart meters, allowing utilities to leverage advanced metering infrastructure.

What is the difference between HES and MDMS ?

HES focuses on data collection and management, while Meter Data Management Systems (MDMS) specialize in processing and analyzing the data for billing and reporting purposes.

How often does smart meter transmit ?

Smart meters typically transmit data at regular intervals, ranging from a few seconds to an hour, depending on the utility’s preferences and requirements.

What is the importance of Head End System ?

The Head End System is crucial for utilities as it provides real-time insights into energy consumption, enhances billing accuracy, and enables efficient management of the smart grid.

Why is Head End System Important ?

The Head End System is vital for utilities to optimize operations, reduce costs, and enhance customer service by leveraging accurate and timely data from smart meters.

What is the accuracy of the Head End System ?

The accuracy of a Head End System depends on its design and implementation, but in general, it aims for high precision in data collection and management to ensure reliable utility operations.
